Fiber fusion splicer, as a high-frequency tool used in the process of fiber optic splicing, is often applied in harsh environments. Proper maintenance can help improve the service life of fiber fusion splicers and enable them to function better. If you have a fiber fusion splicer in your hand, do you maintain it on time?
Taking the frequently used mainline fusion splicer in the communication field as an example, Fujikura Company provides suggestions for the daily maintenance of fusion splicers. Sir, please take a look——
1、 Cleaning
Clean up! Clean up! Clean up! Saying important things three times is never too much.
A、 Cleaning of the entire machine
As a socially responsible company that frequently conducts inspections at customer sites, the engineers at Fujikura Company are also quite knowledgeable. Some fusion splicers are a sight to behold. Dust has accumulated on the welded casing for several years. Although the environment for fiber optic splicing may not be clean, if dust falls into the machine's interior over time, dirtying the V-groove, lens, or motor, what should we do?! So, usually use a cloth or wet tissue to wipe the outer shell of the fusion splicer and the exposed parts on the surface, and blow off the dust with an air blower. It won't take too long.
b. Cleaning of V-shaped groove
The V-groove is an important component in the fusion splicer, which is used to fix and support the left and right optical fibers during fusion splicing. Cleaning the V-groove is an extremely important part of the daily maintenance of the welding machine. The V-groove is an important component in the fusion splicer, which is used to fix and support the left and right optical fibers during fusion splicing.
C、 Cleaning of fiber optic pad and pressure plate
As a part that directly contacts the surface of the optical fiber, any dirt on it will affect the alignment of the optical fiber. So, it's important to regularly wipe with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol
D、 Cleaning of electrodes
After using the fusion splicer for a long time, arc discharge will cause some optical fibers to vaporize, and a part of the glass will adhere to the electrode surface after vaporization, which will also affect the discharge of the electrode over time.
E、 Cleaning of the lens
When dust falls on the lens or the fiber vaporizes and adheres to the lens, it will affect the alignment of the fiber, resulting in situations such as prolonged alignment time or inability to align. At the same time, it will also affect the estimation of fusion losses. When cleaning, first remove the electrode, and then use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to wipe from the center outward in a spiral motion.
F、 Cutting knives are expensive to clean
Wipe the fiber optic clamp block, anvil block, and blade separately with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol. Remember to clean any fiber debris left on the clamp or when the cutting angle is greater than 3 degrees.
2、 Replacement of electrode rod
The electrodes must be replaced frequently. Single core fusion splicers are generally recommended to be replaced every 5000 times, while multi-core fusion splicers are recommended to be replaced every 1500 times. It should be noted that the screwdriver provided by Fujikura Company should be used to gently unscrew the screws that fix the electrodes, and do not use too much force!
3、 Discharge correction
If the usage frequency is high, it is recommended to perform discharge calibration once a day. Otherwise, perform a discharge calibration before each use. Remember to perform discharge calibration whenever the fusion splicer travels long distances or experiences drastic changes in temperature and humidity.
4、 Replacement of blade position and adjustment of blade height
The quality of fiber cutting is closely related to fiber loss, and in order to achieve low loss, good cutting quality also needs to be guaranteed.
The welding machine is like a user's beloved car, which needs to be taken care of and protected in order to improve its service life. In addition, we recommend that the fusion splicer be inspected and maintained by an authorized agent of Fujikura Company every year or so.
